The Nellie R. Stevens is a hybrid shrub most recognizable for its bright red berries in the fall and early winter. The plant’s most popular uses are for privacy purposes and holiday décor.

The Nellie R. Stevens (Ilex x ‘Nellie R. Stevens’) is a rapidly growing shrub, advancing one foot or more in height each year.

The plant’s maturing rate makes it an ideal selection for a privacy hedge or focal point of any landscape.

The Nellie R. Stevens, a cross between Ilex cornuta and I. aquifolium, is widely recognizable for its trademark red berries produced in the fall and early winter months. Thus, another popular use of the plant emerges, as the Nellie R. Stevens is used in many indoor holiday decorations.

This plant’s beauty isn’t limited to the Christmas season, though. In the spring, the Nellie R. Stevens produces small white flowers that emit an attractive fragrance.

Able to thrive in most well-drained soils, this shrub will tolerate drought and the punishing summer heat once it is well established. This characteristic makes the Nellie R. Stevens a widely-grown plant in the Southern states. The shrub also attracts bees, butterflies and other birds.

Recommended spacing is five feet for this selection, which can mature to 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide.
